The article, titled “Governors’ TikTok Bans Make Sense, Cybersecurity Experts Say,” note that the state leaders are concerned about potential security risks because the app is owned by a Chinese company and may be used to collect data from users’ devices. The article contains quotes from numerous cybersecurity experts in support of the action, which could be viewed as political; all the states making the decision were led by Republican governors. Some governors took further action, banning other Chinese-owned apps and products such as WeChat, QQWallet and AliPay. Haugli was also quoted in an online article published by The Information titled “TikTok Owner Now Aiming to Expand into U.S. Enterprise Software Market.” In addition, the PEW article noted that bipartisan action had been taken on the federal level, with the U.S. Senate unanimously passing a bill that would prohibit federal employees from using TikTok on government-owned devices. “TikTok can access your camera and phone, the Wi-Fi connection, contacts, GPS, storage. It can read what you are doing and the things you’ve done,” said SideChannel CEO Brian Haugli in the article. “That thing can tell you where your eyeballs are looking.”
