Holy Family Academy Wins 4th Consecutive Girls Volleyball CAA State Championship

November 07, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - Holy Family Academy, one of the Catholic schools in Phoenix, Ariz., won its fourth consecutive Girls Volleyball Canyon Athletic Association (CAA) Division 1 State Championship Wednesday night. The team defeated Thunderbird Adventist Academy in straight sets at Arizona State University’s Desert Financial Arena. Under the direction of Head Coach Jon Graves, the girls are ranked No. 1 in the CAA Division 1. Team Captain Ellie Maneely received the Player of the Game Award in recognition of her scoring prowess and leadership on the court.

Holy Family Academy is a private, traditional Catholic liberal arts academy designed for parents who want a classical liberal arts education integrated with Catholic teachings for their children in grades K-12. The school’s mission is to produce graduates who can listen carefully, think clearly and reason persuasively. Holy Family Academy emphasizes four areas: religious, academics, arts and athletics. With its religious focus, students pray the Rosary every day, take part in weekly Mass and celebrate Catholic feasts and holy days of obligation. The academic focus has resulted in enhanced MAP scores for all students. Math, Language Usage and Reading scores are at or above the national average. Students participate in a variety of community service events and educational field trips to enhance learning. Holy Family also focuses on the arts where students take part in various art activities, choir and an annual drama production.

And Holy Family Academy, as one of the Catholic schools with athletics in Phoenix, strives to achieve a balance between academics and athletics with the realization that athletics play a vital role in forming the complete person. Athletics is part of the total picture of a healthy student, where physical health and competition must be present to support both the academic and spiritual health of each student.

A girls’ volleyball team was established in 2018 and after only two seasons, it became the 2019-2020 CAA state champions. The team won state championships in the succeeding years winning its fourth consecutive state championship on November 2.

Known as the Padres, Holy Family Academy also has a boys’ baseball team which won the 2019 and 2022 CAA state championships. They defeated the Maryvale Matadors on May 5 to achieve their second CAA state championship.

Founded in 2018, Holy Family Academy is now located in the former headquarters of the Grand Canyon Council of Boy Scouts of America at SR-51 and Thomas Road in Phoenix. Extensive renovations have been made to the campus including building a permanent chapel in 2021. In March 2022, His Excellency Bishop Thomas Olmsted officially recognized Holy Family Academy as an independent, Catholic school in the Diocese of Phoenix.

Today the Academy has 125 students with 11 full-time and six part-time faculty under the direction of Principal Laura Graves. Fr. Alonso Saenz, Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, provides spiritual guidance.
