Oct 14, 2019

BANGKOK — Thailand's southern beaches lure travelers with their turquoise water and dramatic limestone cliffs, but there's more to explore in the Southeast Asian country that's one of the world's most popular destinations. For a Thai road less traveled, try one of these getaways outside Bangkok, far from the overly Instagrammed backpacker hotspots or the party scene of Phuket or Pattaya. ___ BAN KRUT FOR THE BEACH BUM In laid-back Ban Krut, travelers will find one of the cleanest and quietest stretches of white sand within driving distance of the capital, Bangkok. Protests squeezing Hong Kong economy, tourism, leader says

Oct 14, 2019

HONG KONG — Hong Kong's economy is languishing after months of increasingly violent protests, the city's embattled leader Carrie Lam said Tuesday. Lam, addressing reporters after a long weekend of more turmoil, said tourism arrivals were down by half and that hotels and retailers were suffering. Hong Kong's third quarter economic data will definitely be "very bad", said Lam, the semi-autonomous territory's Beijing-backed chief executive said. Lam said she did not have the data with her. But empty streets and tourist attractions are evidence of the fallout from the protests that began in June over a now-shelved extradition bill that...

Hong Kong suspends trains, appeals to public after rioting

Oct 14, 2019

HONG KONG — All subway and train services were suspended and lines formed at the cash machines of shuttered banks as Hong Kong dusted itself off and braced for more protests Saturday after another night of rampaging violence that a new ban on face masks failed to quell. The closure of the entire MTR network that handles more than 4 million trips a day, including the express line to the Hong Kong international airport, was a major and quite exceptional disruption for the usually never-resting but now edgy and restive territory of 7.5 million people. "From MTR to EmptyR," tweeted...

Hong Kong teen protester shot by police to be charged

Oct 14, 2019

HONG KONG — Police say criminal charges will be filed against the 18-year-old Hong Kong student who was the first victim of police gunfire in the months-long pro-democracy protests. The shooting Tuesday on one of the most violent days of the demonstrations inflamed anger against police, who already have been accused of being heavy-handed against protesters. The officer fired as the teen, Tsang Chi-kin, struck him with a metal rod. The government has said Tsang’s condition was stable after surgery. A police statement said the youth will be charged Thursday afternoon with two counts of attacking police. It is unclear...

TOKYO — The Latest on Day 13 at the Rugby World Cup in Japan (all times local): 3:45 p.m. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Samoan counterpart Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi have taken a little time out from official business to talk rugby. The two leaders swapped signed team jerseys ahead of the Japan-Samoa Pool A game at the Rugby World Cup. With a touch of diplomacy, Prime Minister Abe said he was confident it would be "an excellent game" in Toyota on Saturday. Host Japan will be on the brink of a first appearance in the quarterfinals if it beats...
